Introduction

Fujibay was named by Mr Joseph, the inspiration “Fuji" comes from Mount Fuji. The kanji for Mount Fuji, 富 and 士, means "wealth" or "abundant" and "a man of status" respectively, it means Prosperous Mountain, but a popular theory says the name was originally written to mean Peerless Mountain (不二山) since it is a mountain that is like no other in Japan.

Another theory suggests that the elixir for immortality mentioned in The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter was concocted at the peak of Mt. Fuji, so the mountain's name was originally Immortal Mountain (不死山).

Yet another theory claims that because snow never disappears from the summit, the name originally meant Inexhaustible Mountain (不尽山). On the other hand, "Bay" means literally. Bays were significant in the past especially in the history of human settlementPeople used to settle on lands surrounding the bays due to agricultural activities. The land around the bays was found to be a fertile area that led to the production of agricultural goods for food security. Bays were also found to be safe places where fishing could be carried out. In the past, also people realized that bays provided safe anchorage of ships

Mr Joseph wishes that the agriculture and horticulture industry could continue to thrive and produce abundant quality foods that would everlasting. By 2050, the global population will reach nearly 10 billion people and global food demand will soar by 56%. If food trends continue unchanged, 593 million additional hectares of land, equivalent in size to two Indias, would have to be cleared and converted to crop and livestock production to feed this many people. Furthermore, demand for fruits and vegetables, dairy products, fish and meat is going to increase in future. Researches, technology improvements, protected cultivation of high-value greens and other vegetables will be more. There will be more demand for processed and affordable quality products. Therefore, agriculture will not diminish over time. Mr Joseph has a vision, we can decrease demand for agricultural land by growing food in cities, where more people need it, thereby reducing the distances food has to travel.

This would also allow producers to map and match consumers' demand more effectively, by producing close to the places where food is consumed. Ultimately, Fujibay mission is to assist the community in Bintulu, a small town by supplying home gardening needs and knowledge. All of us can contribute to making urban farming possible.

History

The company, originally called Fujibay, was founded by Mrs Josephine Chan Siew Leng and her husband Mr Joseph Wong King Wong in 2007 for logistics purposes. Yet, this horrible pandemic, Covid-19 in 2019 has brought to her family some innovative thoughts. Mrs Josephine enjoys gardening, and her family has been working in the different aspects of agricultural fields. The tradition was passed down from generation to generation. It was not long for the family to realize that food security has been the utmost issue since the pandemic. Therefore, the family started the business in their gardening backyard. We are not just knowing how to grow but we also have the experience to take care of them. We started small by reviewing what the market is providing to us consumers and realize there are not a lot of providers and the variety of fertilisers are limited as well. Therefore, we started to buy a load of premium quality fertilisers from west Malaysia and overseas and repack them into small packaging, designed by Fujibay to tackle the needs of plants. We also have other fertiliser brands that we took in for example Serbajadi.

Mr Jackie, the youngest son operated as the company's only salesman, travelling around the district by car to attract new customers. As the customer base started to expand and grow in leaps and bounds, the operation was moved to a rented shop lot. A few months later, Fujibay started to supply its products to the hypermarkets and supermarket sectors and relocated to the current factory premises to cope with the increasing market demand for Fujibay products. As the business continues to flourish, the company introduces its delivery system for local customers and appointed Mr Jackie Wong, forwarding agents to handle outstation deliveries.
